"Illustrated Souvenir Edition". Original light blue cloth with titles in black and gilt decoration to the spine and upper board, incorporating two vignettes of a Sphinx's head and a pyramid. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Illustrated with 22 black and white photogravure plates with tissue guards captioned in red. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with slight cracking to the front inner-hinge (although everything remains secure), a little fading to the spine and minor bumping to the extremities. The contents with the pencil ownership name of the architect L[eonard] Keir Hett and inscribed "Egypt 1916", and a little minor spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise in good order and clean throughout. The plates remain fresh and bright. An attractive copy.
A wonderfully illustrated exploration of Cairo at the turn of the twentieth century, as well as of its earlier history.
