First UK edition. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine. In dustwrapper. A collection of Johnson's short western stories and novelettes. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and tight. The contents, with some offsetting to the pastedowns and four tiny spots to the text block edges are otherwise clean and bright throughout and without marks or inscriptions. Complete with the beautiful Leslie Wood illustrated dustwrapper which remains lovely and bright to the upper panel despite light sunning to the spine and some dustiness and two small closed tears and one small chip to the lower panel. Not price clipped (15s net to the front flap).
The novelette from which this collection derives its name was turned into a popular film in 1957, the same year as its American publication. One of Johnson's earlier short stories was later turned into the hugely poplar western film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
