Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the title page "For Howard and Marion / Most affectionately / from their old friend / Dennis". The recipients are the Welsh author and journalist Howard Spring and his wife. Howard is name-checked in the opening page of chapter one and notably reviewed many of Wheatley's books for the Evening Standard and other publications. An excellent literary association copy of Wheatley's account of his work during World War II and the fourteen secret war papers he produced between the spring of 1940 and summer of 1941 for Chiefs of Staff, the Joint Planning Staff of the War Cabinet, and His Majesty King George VI.
